Painters' house / Malerhaus
You may wonder why there are so many well kept frescoes on the houses in S.Martino. This is due to the Val Passiria art college which used to be in S.Martino.
The painters’ house is situated just above the village. Apart from the three frescoes (S.Martino, St George and Mary with wreath) which are situated on the front wall of the house, there is nothing that reminds you that there was an art college here from 1719 to 1845.
The art college in Passiria belonged to the so called "Nazarener". The artists were not only active in the valley, but also all over Tyrol. The college was abandoned after Benedikt Auer died in 1845.
So that you can make you own picture of the artists’ work, here are some of the remaining works of art:
In the Parish Church of St. Martin:
- "The Last Supper" by the older Nikolaus Auer (1771),
- "Heart of Christ" by the younger Nikolaus Auer (1801),
- "Worshipping Bethlehem" by Josef Haller (1771).
At the village square on the tower house: Kranzlmutter, St. Josef und Mary; next to the bay window St. Nepomuk and Florinus.
