The gardens
The blossoming gardens of Castle Trauttmansdorff can be found on the sunny slopes above Merano, where once Empress Sissi used to walk.
The beautiful castle rises up out of the centre of the gardens. Earl Trauttmansdorff had it built from a medieval ruin in 1850 and Empress Sissi stayed there twice to partake in a winter cure. The castle is now a museum for tourism, the Touriseum, and it tells over 200 years of Tyrolean tourism history.
More than 100,000 plants, of which there are over 3,000 different varieties, have been planted in the 12 hectares of ground in four different garden areas, the sun garden, the water and terrace garden, the wood garden and the South Tyrolean garden. There are also 11 pavilions, decorated by artists, which show the important strategies of a plant’s life.
Attractions: grotto with multimedia show about the development of plants, geological mosaic as a walk able rock world of Tyrol, orchid house, Japanese garden. Restaurant and picnic areas available. -
