Messner Mountain Museum Juval
The castle was built in 1278 by Hugo von Montalban on a previous prehistoric site. In 1368 it belonged to the lords of Starkenberg and after numerous changes in ownership it was bought by the Sinkmoser family in 1540. It reached its heyday in this period. It was later acquired by the Hendel family, which later sold it to the farmer Josef Blass in 1813. Then started the castle's decline. In 1913 it was bought by the Dutch colonial aristocrat William Rowland who did an exemplary job in restoring it.
Since 1983 it has been home to the famous mountain climber Reinhold Messner, who has used it to host several art collections. It hosts a comprehensive collection of Tibetan items, a gallery of mountain pictures and a collection of masks from 4 continents.
